Brigadier General (Ret) Butler was commissioned Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt)of the U.S. Army in 1974 upon graduation from Austin Peay State University. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and a Master of Science degree from Troy State University in Personnel Management.


Brigadier General Butler is retired from U.S. Army Special Forces, he is currently a private consultant for Simba Enterprises, LLC (SimbaCom) as well as several other companies in the United States and abroad. Additionally, he has served as a Deputy Program Manager for a $5.8 billion project in the Mideast. Brigadier General Butler has spent the majority of his military career in the U.S. Army Special Forces, which culminated as he served as the Director of the Center for Command Support at the United States MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. He joined Kellogg, Brown, & Root in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in May 2004, following his Army career of 29 years.
